Hedgerow
Medicine
Harvest and Make Your Own Herbal
Remedies
We forget that
many centuries ago a lot of our medicines were created from natural
plants and herbs and was the beginning of hedgerow
medicine as we know it today. Those practicing this
medicine were both revered and by some reviled as it was thought to
be some kind of magic! However we don't realize but many of the
medicines we are prescribed are based on these natural remedies
from years ago. The difference is that today's pharmaceutical
companies have found out why they work and made up their own
version so that they can make a profit. Whilst that might seem
wrong in some eyes, without profit no company can survive,
especially in today's financial crisis. In addition by making
profits they can develop other drugs and medicines that otherwise
would not be in existence to help with AIDS Cancers and so on.
So that's the good side of it but if we
want to make our own contribution towards our home medicine chest
then what better place to look for natural cures than
the Hedgerow Medicine book. It is something
the whole family can help in with searching out the basic
ingredients then preparing and using them. many of the medicines
found in the delightful book are milder than those we buy from
the pharmacist and therefore are probably better for us. It does
make you think when you look at a shampoo and it contains
Sodium lauryl sulfate,
which is used to clean garage floors and degreasing
engines. In fact you will find it in all sorts of
things we use daily, like washing up liquid, liquid soap,
toothpaste and so on. Quite
frightening really so natural could well be best.
It has been known for a long time that
hawthorn berries and leaves over time help strengthen heart
muscles, and has been used to reduce the start of arteriosclerosis. It can also aid conditions such as a
rapid and feeble heart action, heart valve defects, enlarged
hearts, angina pectoris and difficulty in breathing due to a
poor heart action and lack of oxygen in the blood. So quite a
medicine found in many a hedgerow! You could even grow some of the
items in your own organic
garden if you want as well.
Julie Bruton-Seal has written a book
about this productive medicine treasure
trove. They have deliberately targeted the book at the likes of you
and me who are interested in natural remedies, when they can be
effective. She together with her co-author Matthew Seal have
discovered natural cures and medicines going back through time
and written them up in this book so that we can easily understand
them.
They also show you how to recognize the
right things to pick and when to harvest them. They then go on to
show you how to make the various "cures" with nicely detailed and
illustrated recipes. So even someone who finds it difficult
not to burn toast, can successfully follow them and get the right
results. Marvellous! You will find 120+ recipes to work your magic
on in Hedgerow Medicine and you will also learn what use and where
and when plus what you should expect from the drug you make from
wild plants and herbs.
The great book is topped off with the
historical origins and how many of these recipes are used in other
countries. Best bet is to get the book, it really does work even if
you only make up a sore throat medicine it is a lot better than the
ones you buy from the chemist and it works.
