How To Grow Your Own Drugs

Organic versus Chemical Food Prodcution, which is Right?

Truth is we don't really know, both have their up and down sides!

In the 21st century our own diet and health has become a major topic of great interest as we begin to see the relationship between the food we consume and our health. Years before we would take it for granted that food is just a means of making our body machine work. Now we know more about the various effects food can have on our wellbeing. So we question Organic versus Chemical, which is right?

We used to think that just eating our fruit and veg was enough, but when the food is analysed the fertilizers and insecticidal sprays mean that a lot of the vitamin and minerals that our bodies crave are not there in the amounts we thought. Not only that but some of the things we use are actually poisonous! Oh dear this Organic versus Chemical debate is quite worrying but before you get too worried , let's just put that into context, anything we eat could be poisonous or certainly detrimental if it is taken in excess. We need to know the diference between Organic versus Chemical for our own welfare.

Modern scientific investigation has indicated that most organically grown vegetables and fruits appear to contain greater amouts of vitamins and minerals than those grown with inorganic therefore artifical fertilizers. So where does our Organic v. Chemical debate get us now?

Over the past century synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides have become common practice on farms throughout the world. This is because the usage of these man made fertilizers and insecticides produce a quicker and more abundant crop which is also probably less likely to fail. This makes sense but it has many downsides in creating undesirable situationslike the loss or depletion of good topsoil, therefore that land becomes less fertile, so what happens? More stronger fertilizers are used and the depletion accelerates faster and faster! Pesticides become less effective over time and they also become stronger as well as the insects they are supposed to kill. A vicious circle. So what do we do Organic versus Chemical?

It is probably inevitable that we will have to continue to a certain extent with this regime simply to provide the increasing amounts of food for an increasing world population. However we can create a situation where we grow some of our foods in the original way in which it was intened i.e.organically to reduce the pressure on the mass production.

The ideal place to start is in our own garden, or allotments, you can choose between Organic versus Chemical. Still think the best taste will come from organic, don't you?
